Dorothy (BAFTA winner Miriam Margolyes) is a lonely widow whose body is beginning to fail, but whose mind remains sharp and full of life. When 17-year-old JJ (Alistair Nwachukwu) accidentally kicks his football into her garden, he disrupts Dorothy’s quiet routine of pills, prunes and crosswords. What begins as an inconvenience soon grows into an unexpected bond, and an unlikely friendship blossoms.
Miriam Margolyes OBE - Miriam Margolyes OBE is one of Britain’s most distinguished actors, celebrated for her commanding performances across stage and screen. She won a BAFTA for The Age of Innocence and has appeared in films including Babe, Yentl, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, Being Julia, and the Harry Potter series, in which she played Professor Sprout.
Internationally acclaimed for both character roles and documentary work, Margolyes is also highly regarded for her classical theatre career and her award-winning audiobook narrations of works by Charles Dickens and Roald Dahl. Her voice work includes iconic roles in Mulan, The Little Vampire, and The Sandman.
In 2002, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama.
Lee Knight is an actor, writer and director with a passion for storytelling across stage and screen. As an actor, he recently appeared as Rosencrantz alongside Sir Ian McKellen in Hamlet (2024) on Amazon Prime, as well as in Vigil 2 (BBC One), The Stolen Girl (Disney+), and the upcoming series Talamasca (ABC+).
His additional screen credits include Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sherlock, The Last Letter from Your Lover, The Trial of Christine Keeler, and BBC’s The North Water.
As a writer, his sitcom pilot The Gym reached the semi-finals of the BBC Comedy Writer’s Room. His first short stage piece, No More Doughnuts, was selected for the Make It Beautiful New Writing Festival in 2021, which he also directed. His radio play The Art of Suffering was selected and produced for the Lost Souls Podcast.
A Friend of Dorothy marks his debut as a short film writer-director.
